Q: Are you a non-profit organization?
A: Yes, we are a 501c3.
Q: Where do you get your funding?
A: Organizations, grants, and most importantly individuals and businesses fund our programs.
Q: How many children are involved?
A: The number of youth varies per level. It’s safe to say that our system affects hundreds of children each year.
Q: How do children get into the academy?
A: We use a referral procedure. Teachers, guidance counselors, administrators, parents, and community advocates all refer students to our program.
Q: Is this a summer camp?
A: No! Camp Compass is an Academy that runs year round.
Q: How long can a child stay involved?
A: Students have levels they progress through. It’s our intention to give them the support they need until they feel our support is no longer needed. Our average student is with us three years, some as long as six years.
Q: What is the most unique feature about your program?
A: Our reward system is unlike any other. Students earn outdoor related trips (fishing, hunting, hiking, rafting, etc.) for appropriate social and academic efforts.
Q: Can you explain Camp Compass Academy in a sentence?
A: It’s hard to do, but we tried: Camp Compass Academy is an intensive and extensive mentoring program for children allowing them to have experiences outside of the city.
Q: Why was Camp Compass started?
A: Sometimes regular school just isn't enough to keep kids on track and motivated.
Q: Is this a national program?
A: In many ways yes! Although our Students mainly come from Allentown area. We have educational partners in 13 states and Canada, that collaborate with us on the reward portion of our program.

Q: Do the children pay for services?
A: All children are on scholarships (partial/full). There is a nominal fee that some students pay. However no student is turned away because of the inability to pay.
Q: What kinds of improvements are seen as a result of your work?
A: Constantly, we see academic and attendance gains. Also, citizenship and social skills are enhanced. Last, data shows our students' self esteem increases tremendously.
Q: Who does the work?
A: A dedicated staff of volunteers. Our Social and Academic reporting is done by certified educators and paraprofessionals. Our reward trips are conducted by trained mentors.
Our fundraising is done by anyone wishing to help as long as they are willing to work as a team. |
